Timber framing is NOT inherently expensive. It does take time, yes. And a certain amount of knowledge/skill. But any able bodied adult can learn how to make a basic timber frame cabin or shed like this one. Don't believe us? Come to our 3 day timber framing class. In just three days, you can learn the essentials you need to build this cabin. You don't need a bunch of expensive tools, either. A vintage chain mortiser is nice and speeds this up. So does a 1- 1/4" circular saw. But if you wanted to

Low key genius. One of the amazing features of timber frame structures, both Eastern and Western, is that they can be taken apart. This means the entire structure can be cut elsewhere, transported, and raised in just a day or two. It also means rotten or damaged areas can be replaced (depending on the structure's design) and the pieces can even be re used. This joint is shiribasami tsugi, a Japanese scarf joint that can be used vertically or horizontally. It can include an intentional gap to mak

Just the facts 🤓 Heavy timber structures are just as fire resistant, or more fire resistant, than ones made with steel, concrete, and masonry. Timber frame structures are more fire resistant that stick framing. #timberframe#timberframing#woodwork#woodworking#woodworker#carpentrywork#carpenter | Appalachian Wood Homestead

Now for the real work... Timber framing fun and the raising day is satisfying, but raising is the beginning of a new phase of work. This week we’re making rafters. Next week we’re planing and routing boards for the ceiling. After that we’ll start working on wood shingles. #timberframe #timberframing #woodworking #carpentry #carpentryskills #carpentrylife #carpentrywork | Appalachian Wood Homestead

Bent raisingThe sections of timber frames are called “bents.” They are assembled on the ground, then raised into place. Using catch poles made from 2x4s with notches helps make sure the frame doesn’t fall back down during the raising process. Then you screw a few boards in place to keep the bent standing while you assemble the next one.

Priorities. We build a woodshed last year, but the firewood isn’t stored there because it turned into tool and timber frame storage 😅Have to keep that timber frame pergola for class looking good and fitting together! Many timber frame classes charge you top dollar to build a frame at class, then they turn around and sell the frame. That doesn’t sit well with us. Instead, each student makes his or her own model then we all raise a frame that’s pre-cut. The pieces here are part of our demonstrati

Experience community. The most important part of timber framing can't be learned from a book or a video. It has to be experienced in person when you raise a timber frame in community with others. Experience community with us at one of our three day timber framing intensives in 2026. #timberframe #timberframing #woodworkingtips #carpentrylife #carpentryskills #carpentrywork | Appalachian Wood Homestead

Wet wood Did you see that 😳 It rained on raising day at our May timber framing class. The frame was very tight, but we got it together with teamwork and ratchet straps. #timberframing #timberframe #woodwork #woodworking #woodworker #carpentryskills #carpenter #carpentrywork | Appalachian Wood Homestead

What about labor?!?!The biggest pushback we get on timber framing is "my labor tho!"Yes, timber framing takes time. Yes, it takes a little more skill than stick framing. (This feels unfair to say because there are some spectacular modern carpenters out there, but. But your basic build quality is fairly low, on average.)However, it is completely possible to slowly build your own timber frame over time in a way that simply isn't possible with a stick frame build that's sitting out in the weather.A

Timber framing changed our lives. Everyone wants a village, but no one wants to be a villager...until they experience what it feels like to actually do something in community with others. Timber framing and hosting timber framing classes have changed our lives for the better. They've helped us realize that our ancestors weren't "doing it all alone." They were doing it TOGETHER in community with their neighbors. If you want to experience the magic of timber framing, we'd be honored to have you at

Works like a charm. Making square hand cuts is easy when you know how to use the pulling corners technique. Traditional techniques like this are what we teach our timber framing class students. We only have about three spots left for the entire rest of the year, so sign up now if you don't want to wait until 2026! #timberframe #timberframing #woodworking #woodwork #woodworker #carpentry #carpentrytips | Appalachian Wood Homestead

Stone joinery? The mortise and tenon joint, the most essential joint in timber framing, is at least 7,000 years old and has been worked in both wood and stone. Yes, there are mortise and tenon joints in stone! Including in the standing stones at Stonehenge. The standing stones used to have stone lintels that were held in place by mortise and tenon joints worked into the stone. #timberframe #timberframing #woodworking #woodwork | Appalachian Wood Homestead
