A Goa court on Friday found a 31-year-old man guilty of raping and murdering a British-Irish backpacker at Palolem beach in March 2017

The 28-year-old victim had come to Goa with a friend for a holiday in February 2017. She had befriended the accused during an earlier trip.

LONDON: A man has been found guilty in India of the rape and murder of Irish backpacker Danielle McLaughlin in 2017, her family's solicitor said on Friday (Feb 14).

The trial started in April 2018. In 2023, the High Court ordered the Sessions Court to complete the trial within a year. An extension was granted last October, which concluded on Friday

The victim, who was 28 at the time, was found dead near Palolem beach in South Goa’s Canacona on March 14 that year.
