Before Florida men's basketball plays in the Final Four this weekend, the Gators women's basketball team will look to make some history of their own this week in the WBIT.
Context: The Gophers advanced to the WNIT final last season and are now 6-1 in postseason games under second-year coach Dawn Plitzuweit. The Gators are playing in their first postseason semifinal since 2013. Belmont (25-12) and Villanova (21-14) play in the other semifinal. The championship is scheduled for Tuesday at 6 p.m.
Florida women's basketball is playing in the WBIT semifinals Monday afternoon, but coach Kelly Rae Finley is back in Gainesville with some exciting news to share:
The Bruins had erased a 21-point deficit earlier in the tournament, but 24 was too much as the Golden Gophers had time on their side.
Florida (19-17) has wins over Northern Iowa, UNLV and Texas Tech en route to Monday's semifinals. The Gators are led by former Hopkins High School star Liv McGill. As a true freshman, she is averaging a team-high 16.5 points, 4.4 rebounds and 5.3 assists per game. She's averaging 16.3 points and 6.6 assists during their WBIT run.
