As Friedman pointed out, the Maple Leafs don't have a first-round pick in the 2025 draft. Toronto, however, has its first-round pick in the 2026 draft as well as all picks from 2027 on. Without such a premium draft asset to dangle, the Leafs may need to move a top prospect worth that type of selection to complete a meaningful trade.

In a recent episode of The Sheet, NHL insider Jeff Marek revealed that the Blues almost traded Pietrangelo to the Toronto Maple Leafs for star forward William Nylander. "It wasn't that long ago that it was pretty close, that he [Nylander] was going to St. Louis, and Alex Pietrangelo was going the other way to the Toronto Maple Leafs," Marek said.
