The imprisoned and ousted Istanbul mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu testified Friday at the opening of a trial over accusations of threatening a public prosecutor - one of several legal cases that could result in a prison sentence and a ban on holding public office.

Istanbul Mayor Ekrem Imamoglu raged against his arrest during his first appearance in court after being arrested by the Turkish government.

Imamoglu is being held on corruption and terrorism charges, but appeared in a special court at Silivri jail in a separate case on Friday accused of trying to intimidate Istanbul's chief prosecutor. Turkey's opposition has condemned Imamoglu's arrest as a "coup attempt against our next president" and his detention has prompted the biggest anti-Erdogan protests in more than a decade.
