California and Democratic-run states go to court to halt NIH funding cuts that leaders say could harm life-saving medical research work at UC, Cal State. The suit said the cuts were in violation of the law.

The funds, known as “indirect costs,” help universities maintain expensive labs and other infrastructure. Trump’s administration seeks to cut that funding by roughly half the current amount.
