Subbing in for the injured Casey Mittelstadt (lower body) on the second line with Pavel Zacha and Viktor Arvidsson, Steeves played well against the Leafs on Saturday in the first half of the home-and-home. He caused a turnover and then applied forechecking pressure that led to Arvidsson’s opportunistic goal in the B’s 5-3 win over the Leafs.
Mittelstadt’s absence means that Boston is without its top two opening night centers. Pavel Zacha is now centering the second line with Providence call-up Alex Steeves on the left wing. Mittelstadt had four goals and five assists before the injury. He took a big hit in Boston’s win over Ottawa on Thursday but returned to the game.
