Trump announced "a very large tariff on chips and semiconductors," but said that companies investing in the U.S. like Apple would be exempted.

In April, Trump publicly promised that his trade war would result in "Made in America" iPhones, but Apple remained silent. By May, Trump appeared frustrated by Apple's supply chain moves, claiming while on a Middle East tour that he had “a little problem with Tim Cook."

The White House said the pledge would bring more of the company’s supply chain and advanced manufacturing to the United States.
