Scientists in Russia have revealed the geological impact of an earthquake that struck Russia's far east and prompted tsunami warnings as far away as Hawaii. The Kamchatka Peninsula and surrounding Pacific Rim regions faced seismic instability after an 8.8 magnitude earthquake struck off the Russian coast on July 30.

The overnight eruption of the Krasheninnikov Volcano in Kamchatka, its first in 600 years, may be connected to the huge earthquake that rocked Russia’s Far East last week, Russia’s RIA state news agency and scientists reported on Sunday.

The Krasheninnikov volcano’s first eruption in centuries is believed to have been triggered in part by the massive earthquake a few earlier.
