Episode 8 erupts in Kīlauea caldera following 6-day pause in activity
Kīlauea volcano on the Big Island roared back into action the night of Feb. 3 after a 6-day pause in eruptive activity, with lava fountains reaching more than 250 feet high within the first hour of the newest eruptive activity inside Kaluapele, the volcano’s summit caldera.

Aerial monitoring by the USGS Hawaiian Volcano Observatory on February 12 revealed that while episode 9 of Kīlauea’s eruption ended that morning at 8:43 a.m. HST, lava continued to flow in parts of the caldera.

Kīlauea began erupting from the southwest part of the caldera at approximately 2:20 a.m. HST on December. 23, 2024. Eruptive vents located in the southwest part of the caldera have been intermittently active, with new lava flows intermittently active over parts of Halemaʻumaʻu crater surface.

Episode 8 of the ongoing Halemaʻumaʻu eruption at Kīlauea began at 9:52 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 3, 2025 and is currently fountaining from the north vent, according to the USGS Hawaiian Volcano Observatory.
