The North Wildwood Recreation Department kicks off the month with its annual surf fishing competition Sept. 5, 6 and 7.

Michael Robidoux of Navarre died after attempting to rescue two children caught in rough surf along Navarre Beach late Saturday, said Danny Fureigh, chief of the Navarre Beach Fire Rescue Department.

Surf fishing can be daunting. Standing on the beach looking at the crashing waves and vastness of the ocean makes you feel small. It’s not like a pond or river that you can more easily break down.
