Elk River Trail Foundation President Ken Tawney said that the trails have had tremendous impact for the towns and cities the trails are in.

The trail runs adjacent to the Elk River. Most of the trail system has been developed up to this point with the exception of a portion north of Clendenin to Clay.

The Elk River Rail Trailhead is a 52-mile trail that runs alongside the synonymous river from Gassaway to Clendenin, according to a news release from the Office of the Governor.

The Elk River Rail Trail is now open for walkers and bikers from in and around the community. In the future, the town of Clendenin hopes to expand the trail into surrounding towns.
