The Department of Agriculture has imposed a mandatory housing order for poultry and captive birds, effective from 10 November, following the first outbreak of highly pathogenic H5N1 bird flu on a farm in the country since 2022.
In just 22 days, a new avian influenza outbreak has hit 18 farms in Indiana, leading to more than 92,000 chickens and ducks being killed. On Wednesday, the Indiana Board of Animal Health put three more farms under quarantine.
Cases of bird flu have been reported in farm animals across the country. While there are no human cases, some are concerned the shutdown and cuts to federal resources have us flying in the dark.
