A rare wave of U.S.-China camaraderie broke out online in recent days as “refugees” from the popular short video platform TikTok poured onto a Chinese social media platform to protest a now-delayed ban on the service.

The Chinese social media platform Xiaohongshu, also referred to as RedNote in English, has sprung to supremacy as the top free app on iPhone as the ban on TikTok took effect Sunday, drawing the ire of U.

Xiaohongshu, whose name literally means "little red book" but is also known in English as RedNote, is wildly popular in its home market -- one of the most censored countries in the world. This contradiction makes the app's sudden popularity among U.S. users both puzzling and potentially troubling for Xiaohongshu.

On the heels of TikTok's looming shutdown on January 19 over its ownership in the U.S. (unless the Supreme Court intervenes), it looks like another American users are flocking to a Chinese app called Xiaohongshu as people become less optimistic that TikTok can overturn U.

With a TikTok ban set to go into effect in the U.S. on Sunday, social media users in the U.S. are migrating to Xiaohongshu, also known as ‘REDnote.’

Ahead of a potential ban this Sunday, Xiaohongshu, which is also known as Red Note or Booktok, quickly became the most downloaded free app on the U.S. App Store on Tuesday, surpassing Lemon8, a social network app that is also owned by TikTok parent ByteDance.
