Experts say recipient countries are likely feeling economic and political pressure from the United States to accept deportees.

The Trump administration on Saturday appeared to deepen its standoff with a federal judge over the status of a man it wrongly deported to a Salvadoran prison, ignoring orders to provide a plan to return him to the United States.

The figure would far surpass historical benchmarks. The highest number of deportations in a single year — more than 400,000 — occurred during Barack Obama’s presidency. It remains unclear, however, how the new goal is calculated.
