Attorney General James Uthmeier’s office, in a 22-page court document filed Tuesday, disputed that the law improperly encroaches on the federal government’s authority to enforce immigration laws.

Pointing to the federal government’s power to regulate immigration, a U.S. district judge Friday temporarily blocked a new Florida law aimed at cracking down on undocumented immigrants.

Though there undoubtedly are appeals ahead, the American Civil Liberties Union is celebrating a district court pause in the enforcement of Florida’s immigration law.
